Wrapping up Virtual NSLI-Y for Arabic
November 28, 2022Honestly, I cannot believe I am writing this post. It seems like just yesterday I was beginning the ten-week virtual NSLI-Y course in the study of Arabic through the United States Department of State. I finished the final class on this past November 20th by passing the required proficiency test. We have a formal graduation ceremony with our peers from the Fall 2022 Virtual NSLI-Y program on the evening of November 30, 2022. I am looking forward to the ceremony.
I enjoyed many aspects of the program. I relished the quality instruction in the Arabic Language (including pronunciation/grammar). The focus on culture was particularly enlightening. One specific example is that each Arabic speaking country has its own unique “cry of joy”! In addition, I was able to interact with my peers from all areas of the United States in a personal way due to the small class size. Our instructor did a great job bringing us together as a diverse community of learners, even in the virtual forum. The virtual medium of the class allowed me to juggle all my other responsibilities and keep commitments timely. Upon completion of the class, I asked my instructor if it would be appropriate to establish a “group chat” with my fellow student. My instructor answered with an empathic “Yes”! After that, I happily established the group chat for my classmates. I look forward to staying in touch with all of them. I also feel it will allow us to share common knowledge and resources, as we all grown, develop and move through these next chapters of our lives.
In summary, I am thankful for this special experience and the opportunity to study Arabic at the beginner level. My instructor was phenomenal. I had also had unique access to guest speakers and SME’s throughout the program. We heard from several NSLI-Y alumni who now have careers in the foreign service. I intend to continue my study of Arabic; hopefully through NSLI-Y Study Abroad or more independent study.
