Summer 2023 Internship Update: YAY!

Some of my waiting ended happily a week ago last Friday.  I was notified that I have been accepted into a highly selective Summer Archeology/Anthropology Internship  through the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.  I was super excited and honored to read the news; especially since I have been anxiously waiting and checking my email every day!

This program takes place this Summer (2023) Monday-Thursday in Columbia, South Carolina.  On Fridays, I will blog, aid in research or take courses online from home.  Columbia is roughly 1.5 hours from my home (each way), so this is a significant time commitment.  During the internship, I will be able to learn directly from professionals in various fields of archeology and anthropology.  As I understand it, I will be helping to sort, wash and catalogue artifacts.  Also, there will be guest lectures on many different topics, including cultural anthropology, forensic anthropology and archeology.   Something that piqued my interest about the program was its mention of maritime archeology. Maritime archeology is the study of past human cultures with an emphasis on how humans interacted with the world’s oceans, lakes and river systems.  This is something totally new to me and I am incredibly excited to learn about it. I imagine that given the rich maritime history of South Carolina’s coast, there is much to uncover.

I will also have the opportunity to participate in specific and necessary research for South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.  I am especially excited to engage in formal research through such a well-respected agency.  I hope this summer’s research will lead to ongoing research possibilities by developing relationships with faculty and professionals.

Overall, I look forward to this new experience and I can’t wait for the summer!  I will be sure to share what I learn with all of you!
