SCDNR Archeology Internship Schedule is out!

I am so excited!  Last week I received the schedule for my summer archeology internship at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources in Columbia, SC.  The internship runs June 3-July 12 and the hours are 9 am to 4:30pm.  The schedule lays out the daily activities in detail and is amazingly comprehensive.

We will cover many topics including laboratory procedures, lithics, electrolysis, photography for archeology, archeological history and specifically, the history of archeology in South Carolina.  We also will hear from many guest lecturers on historical research, forensic anthropology, zooarcheology, and disaster preparedness/recovery just to name a few.  There are also field trips to the Nipper Creek Heritage Preserve, S.C. State Museum, and archeological fieldwork that includes the Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve.

My friend, Chief Lamar Nelson is also coming to speak to our group.  Approximately one month into the internship there is a scheduled panel conversation about Careers in Archeology to which I am really looking forward.  We have several opportunities to participate in community outreach.

On Fridays, we are able to “work” from home.  This work includes research, independent reading, Blogging or completing training that is required for our internship.  One of the training courses is around, “Leave No Trace”.

In short, I am really looking forward to this summer.  I know that I will learn a tremendous amount during the course of the six weeks and I am excited to share what I learn and my progress with you here!
