RESEARCH!

Asking for the opportunity to participate in faculty research can be a little overwhelming and scary.  The formal process is generally to approach various professors/faculty members via email (and basically cold call) to establish a relationship and then hopefully at some point, feel comfortable enough to ask for a research role.

However, I am really fortunate in that my volunteerism through archeology labs at the Native American Studies Center at the USC-Lancaster led to a natural conversation about research.  My friend, and mentor, Professor Judge completes a great deal of field and lab work through his various roles; chiefly through the Native American Studies Center.  I noticed during labs he often speaks of working long hours and weekends to catch up on his work after being in the field.  I dawned on me that he could probably use some help.

Then and there, I decided I would ask if he may have any entry-level research roles for me.  The entry-level role would do two things.  First, it would allow me to add value and learn the research process from the ground up. Second, it would allow my mentor to train me to his process and gradually entrust me with more complex work over time.

Given this, I crafted a thoughtful email and asked for the research role.  Much to my relief, he quickly responded with a “yes” and that he would compile a list of options and allow me to choose from those options.  This response was an exciting one.  I am looking forward to discussing these options with Professor Judge.  I cannot wait to begin developing my research skills through my work with him and then expanding those skills during my archeology internship at the S.C. Department of Natural Resources this coming summer.
