Native American Heritage Month & The Sage Project ‘23-‘24

November is always a busy time of year.  For me, it has become much busier in the past two years.  November is also Native American Heritage Month.  During the month of November, I place sage green bows on the mailboxes in my neighborhood (funded through my non-profit, the Sage Project).  The purpose of these bows and the mailbox flyers that accompany them is to raise community awareness of the rich Native American history of our area and the ongoing contributions of the Native American culture in our neighborhoods and community at-large. This year, I am happy to report that our Homeowners Association approved the addition of fund-raising or contribution information to the flyers.

This addition is exciting for several reasons.  It will allow the opportunity to build funding for the Sage Project.  Through this NPO, I was able to schedule visit from the Catawba Nation to my former elementary school, St. Matthews Elementary on November 28th of this year.  The Catawba Nation will present to the fourth graders at the school through history, storytelling, and sharing artifacts with the children.  I would love to expand the programming to other area elementary schools and additional funding will allow that expansion.  Also, through the Sage Project and our Charlotte Catholic High School Anthropology Club, we participate the Tree of Good Spirit at the Catawba Nation (similar to Angel Tree).  Last holiday season, we sponsored one child.  I hope to expand our commitment to an entire family or several children through added funding from the Sage Project and in partnership with our club members’ contributions.

November is an EXCITING time.  It is a time of Thanksgiving and I look forward to it for so many reasons.  More to come on our event on November 28th and all the great things to come in November of 2023.
