Hello 2024 / Hello Research

I mentioned in a prior post that I was soon to begin my first faculty research assignment.  Well, the time has come and I am now steadfastly working on my assigned project.  My work is specifc to the Mulberry Mounds which are part of the McDowell Site, as known at the Chestnut Mounts or part of the Mulberry Plantation House.   This site is located near Camden, South Carolina.  It is believed to be one of the first archeological sites to have been excavated with care and the findings of that excavation reported with consistency.

The goal of this specific research is to create tables for each “location” within the Mulberry Mound C showing the type and number of each artifact uncovered.  Terms like “rim”, “burnished rim”, “sherd” are category headings.  I used a key for reference when reviewing abbreviations.  The key can be tricky to navigate, and I have it printed for easier reference.  The printed copy of the key also helps me keep track of where I am in the table without having to toggle between several different documents.  This type of research is tedious, but also somewhat therapeutic as it allows me to focus on something very different from my other schoolwork.

I look foward to updating my readers on the progress and the stories that the tables tell once they are created.  More to follow as I continue to wade into 2024.
