Exploring Archeological Labs

Recently, I was fortunate enough to attend a lab aiming to analyze some of the contents found on an archeological dig near the Great Pee Dee River. I was never aware that used toothbrushes can have an alternative purpose after cleaning my pearly whites! The toothbrushes helped to reveal many intricate patterns on Native American pottery pieces, flakes of what could have been tools and fire-cracked stones. It was a blessing to be able to see the process of how artifacts are found and cleaned, while also being able to accompany real professionals on a true archeological dig.  Although I have only attended two labs, I am able sort more easily the different types of artifacts and tell the difference between a pebble and something of true archeological significance.  My thanks to Professor Christopher Judge, USC Lancaster for helping make this discovery journey possible and fun!  I am hooked and look forward to learning more.
