ACCEPTED for NSLI-Y Morocco Summer ‘23!

Recently, I was accepted as a finalist NSLI-Y summer language immersion program studying Arabic in Marrakesh, Morocco.  The application process was very long and many steps were involved leading up to being accepted. NSLI-Y is a highly selective program with nearly three-thousand applicants annually and only approximately fifteen percent of these applicants become finalists.  Knowing this information, I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of this program and to have been selected as a finalist.

During the course of the program, I will be spending a little over a month in Morocco learning the Arabic language.   I will be living with an Arabic speaking host family during the course of the program as the program focuses on a fully immersive cultural experience.  I am nervous because I know that it is a long time away from home and I will have to learn many things. However, I am excited to meet many new people and expand my language skills.  I may also have the chance to attend events at the Embassy and family events such as weddings with my host family.

As look ahead, much of my apprehension stems from the fact that this will be the farthest I have traveled from home; literally to north Africa!  It will also be longest period of time I have ever spent away from home without my parents. Although it is daunting, I look forward to participating in the program this summer.  I know that after completion, I will certainly have a broader world view and deeper understanding of the Arabic language and specifically Moroccan culture.  I also expect to have a sense of accomplishment and a greater appreciation for my daily life in  American and the comforts of home.
