Remembering our Archeology Lab Holiday Party
January 11, 2025I have frequently written about my “ lab” family at the Native American Studies Center (USC-Lancaster). Our archeology labs are special, unique collections of individuals from all walks and seasons of life. We have former educators, current educators, students, professionals (in other fields), an “actual” archeologist and professor. I love our group and how we are all connected by our desire to learn about the past and our common interests in archeology and Native American studies.
One of my favorite events is our annual lab family Christmas gathering. It’s nothing formal; usually just at a local restaurant. We gather after lab and break bread together. Some of our lab ladies bring chocolates or little holiday treats to share with the group. We all usually bring a gift for our leader and mentor, Professor Judge. We sit around the table, laughing, talking and inquiring about each other’s holiday plans. Since we are all in different life seasons, some of us are having quiet holidays with pets and children and grandchildren arriving later in the week. Others, like my family, enjoy Christmas morning at home and then gather with loved ones later on Christmas day. We all enjoy differing levels of quiet and chaos.
It is a precious time and a great reminder to me of how important it is to stay connected with the past, both recent and ancient. I enjoy the dialogue with retirees who are at a different stage in life. It gives me perspective, and also warms my heart. These gracious ladies (and sometimes their spouses) from another generation inspire me to live with purpose.
Happy New Year!
